At Diamond Design
At Diamond Design, we’re pleased to provide a full suite of in-house, professional appraisal services by our Gemmologist Julie Deriaz FGA, P.Geo, B.Sc.(Hons). Up to date appraisals of your jewellery and watches are critical to maintaining adequate insurance protection, especially with the fluctuating dollar and price of gold. You may also want to determine the value or authenticity of your jewellery for estate and tax purposes.
Helping you protect your precious investment
Why get a jewellery or watch appraisal?
There are several reasons why you may require a jewellery or watch appraisal.
The primary reason is to obtain insurance coverage for the full protection of your item, should it become lost, stolen, or damaged. Most homeowner’s policies consist of a modest limit covering unscheduled items, and within these policies, limitations may exist on ‘per piece’ items.
In order to ensure that you are covered adequately for the full value of your item(s), it is important to have an appraisal completed and filed with your insurance agency as a scheduled item to prove, in the case of an insurance claim, the existence and ownership of the item, the condition and description of the item and its current value.
Appraisals can also be useful for determining the value or authenticity of your jewellery or watches for estate dispersion, tax purposes, donations, and loans.
It is generally recommended that appraisals be updated every two years.
What does the appraisal process entail?
The appraisal process includes a full inspection and cleaning of your jewellery or watch. Each item is then carefully tested, identified, measured and graded, described, valued and appraised.
Gemstones and diamonds are never removed or unseated in order to complete an appraisal.
A written report is then provided in printed and/or digital format.
Our jewellery and watch appraisals include:
Current retail prices in the regional market
A detailed description of diamonds and gemstones (cut, color, clarity and carat weight, measurements, proportion, and finish)
Content and weight of the precious metal used in the mounting
A colour photograph of the pieces
Manufacturer’s marks including brand name, serial numbers, and model numbers
The appraised value
The signature of a certified gemmologist or accredited appraiser
