Our good friend and community partner wins
NLOWE Young Entrepreneur of 2018
A well deserved accomplishment for a local self-starter with a fascinating story.
Perhaps you’ve heard that local design sensation Megan Sooley of Sooley Designs was named the Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs Young Entrepreneur of 2018.
Megan turned a love for fashion into a booming, international business. Diamond Design fans might remember Sooley Designs from our John Hardy Fashion Show.
It was a pleasure to partner with Megan, whose company has grown exponentially since then – even as she’s added ‘Mommy’ to her list of titles.
In fact, it was motherhood that inspired Megan to donate annual proceeds from her popular ticket sale fashions to local charities.
It’s this commitment to giving back to her community coupled with her flourishing business that led to her most recent recognition.
NLOWE Awards recognize women entrepreneurs whose successful businesses contribute to the provincial economy and their communities.
Megan’s impressive career started in her bedroom in her mother’s house, on the sewing machine she got when she was 10 years old. “Fabric gives me an outlet to create what I want,” she says.
Thanks in part to her smart social media savvy – it was simple posts of herself in her creations that kick started her popularity – Megan’s company has established itself with innovative, highly sought designs. She now turns down invitations to international fashion shows, instead preferring to show her work locally.
International shows are expensive, she explains, so the money she saves by holding her shows in St. John’s means she’s able to support local charities.
In addition to the NLOWE Award last Fall, Megan and her husband Jon were married in October. And yes, the dress(es) she wore that day were her own creations! We were honoured to help design and build their custom wedding rings to suit their unique personalities and style.
Clearly 2018 has been a banner year! Our best wishes to Megan for continued success in growing the Sooley Designs brand.
